CARBON NEUTRAL BEER TAPS NEXT GENERATION

Capital Brewing Co is leading the charge into brewing sustainability and the hearts of the next generations, becoming the first ‘carbon neutral’ brewery and products in Australia – and sharing the secrets with the industry.

Capital Brewing Co (CBC) has become the first brewer in the country to achieve Climate Active Carbon Neutral certification, for both the entire organisation and all its products.

Co-founded and managed by Tom Hertel and Laurence Kain, CBC has a strong and growing relationship with pubs, currently supplying around 600 venues on the east coast with keg beer.

The company is looking to increase its tap distribution, and sees the importance in appealing to the modern consumer.

“Our research indicates one in two GenY and millennial consumers are looking for greener alternatives … so that’s about 50 per cent of the market attending most licensed premises,” explains Kain.

The road to being sustainable is widely seen as restrictive, laborious and expensive.

For this reason CBC has led a partnership with the Department of Industry and Pangolin Associates to develop a template for other independent brewers, allowing them to easily calculate their own carbon emissions and plan a pathway – with a reduced administrative cost – to their own Carbon Neutral certification.

The template will be provided to the independent brewing industry via the Independent Brewers Association.

Kain says they are putting the information out there “To help our industry colleagues get on board and be a leading industry on environmental responsibility.

“It is difficult and expensive for small and medium businesses to get the ball rolling and this template really helps people start in the right direction.”
