The Hurley Hotel Group has announced the acquisition of the iconic Barker Hotel, culminating a two-decade rein for the Fassina family.
The family-owned South Australian hotel group currently operates a portfolio of nine hotels, including the renowned Arkaba, Hotel Royal, Marion, and Torrens Arms.
Now notching up ten venues, the deal marks a strategic expansion for the Group, further cementing its strong presence in the state’s hospitality scene. This latest acquisition sees the Hurleys partner with Adelaide Crows legend Mark Ricciuto and group general manager Sam McInnes, who will both have a stake in the new venue.
“The Barker is a well-presented, well-located venue in one of the most rapidly growing regions of South Australia,” says McInnes, who believes the pub aligns well with their existing portfolio.
“We’re excited to be part of Mount Barker’s thriving community. The town has experienced significant growth in recent years and is on track to become South Australia’s largest city outside of Adelaide.”
Originally known as the Scotch Thistle Inn, first licensed in 1846, the Hotel holds a special place in Mount Barker’s history and is the oldest surviving hotel in town.
It has been under the ownership of the Fassina family since 2003, who undertook a major renovation in 2014, hoping to modernise while retaining its heritage features.
“It’s been quite a ride, but all good things must come to an end,” reflects Ross Fassina, founder of Fassina Liquors and grateful publican proprietor for 21 years.
“We’re deeply thankful to our dedicated staff, many of whom have been with us since day one. Their hard work has made the Barker the warm, inviting place it is today.
“Although it’s a sad day for us, I take comfort in knowing the Hurley Group will continue to develop the Barker with the same respect for its heritage, working alongside our fantastic staff.”
With settlement set for early 2025, acquisition of the Barker Hotel is the first for the Hurleys since 2019, when they acquired the Ivory Waterside in Tweed Heads, NSW.
Earlier this year, the Group also began construction on Hotel Panorama, following the acquisition of the Tonsley Hotel by the South Australian government as part of the Torrens to Darlington Road project.
Built around 1840, the Barker Hotel has been carefully modernised while retaining much of its character, including heritage features and original stonework. It offers a chic Lounge Bar with high ceilings, cosy fireplaces, and large TV screens, making it a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.
McInnes confirmed there are no immediate plans for major changes to the hotel’s layout or operations, allowing the venue’s charm to remain intact while benefiting from Hurley Group expertise.
“We will focus on providing quality food, beverage, functions and gaming facilities, and continue to train and employ from the local community.”
