Fraser Short has laid down the gauntlet in the form of free beer for everyone if Sydney’s much-anticipated light rail succeeds in delivering passengers before Christmas.
After four long years of construction, currently marking 18 months since its prior scheduled opening, the NSW government has indicated Sydney’s CBD and Southeast Light Rail will be operational this month.
Located on the corner of George and Grosvenor Streets, The Morrison has been at the epicentre of the disruption to pedestrians and businesses, and Short is issuing a call-out for the sake of all those affected.
“I’m so confident that it won’t run on time that I’ll shout the whole city a drink if the tram makes it from Randwick to the stop outside The Morrison with a cargo of paying passengers by Christmas.”
The cheeky and potentially costly bet comes as Short and The Morrison gear up for the much-needed boost to local industry, encouraging people back into the city and The Rocks in time for summer.
“It will become an option again. I think everyone’s been avoiding the city for the last four years. It’s actually a pretty exciting time for a Sydney-sider, it’s going to be a bit of a game-changer.”
The running of the trams by 25 December will evoke The Morrison’s ‘Tram Party’, and everyone that submits an RSVP will be granted a free beer.
And if the first service stops at The Morrison on time, beers will be upgraded to wine.

“If we are wrong we look forward to paying up,” adds Short. “The hope is we shout everyone a free drink. The hope is the trams are running and people are back to using the city again.”
