NEWCOMER PICKS UP GARRY OWEN

Garry Owen is looking to a new future in Rozelle, as the century-old inner west pub changes hands again.

Occupying a 358sqm lot on a corner of bustling Darling Street, the two-storey Garry Owen was built in 1920.

Holding a midnight liquor licence, it features a public bar, bistro, gaming room with 10 machines, function room, a spacious first floor deck and rear balcony offering views to the city, and a small apartment.

The foodservice is leased to a subcontractor, and there is alfresco seating approved for Denison Street, for 40 patrons.

It came to market in May, with sales literature suggesting an incoming operator would benefit from greater optimisation of trade, and by reclaiming the foodservice to install a revised offering possibly more in line with the local demographic.

Garry has passed through a few hands in the past decade, bought by Bruce Harden and Renato Botter in 2018 from Bill and Margaret Sloan, who had taken the business from Laundy Hotels in 2013.

The freehold going concern has now sold for nearly $7 million to a new entrant, believed to be a local property developer, who is considering leasing the operation.

The sale campaign was conducted through HTL Property’s Blake Edwards and Sam Handy, who speak of hoteliers reporting positivity and sustained “strong YOY revenue growth” for at least the last quarter.

“We have seen a notable increase in favourable sentiment, activity, transactions and confidence across the NSW pub industry since the commencement of the new financial year,” says Edwards.
