Dynamic hospitality duo Fumi and Takako Tamura have taken the next step in the game, creating a Japanese-style pub in Fitzroy, dubbed Izakaya by Tamura.

In 2019 the couple opened the intimate Tamura Sake Bar, suited to small groups. Wanting a space that could cater to greater numbers, and finding a distinct lack of authentic “izakayas” in the area, they have founded a 150-seat pub on Fitzroy’s Smith Street.
Championing authenticity, Izakaya by Tamura focuses on Japanese drinking, eating and music culture. (An izakaya is an informal Japanese bar, popular for after-work alcoholic drinks and snacks.)
They located a recently vacated two-storey bluestone site previously occupied by Mamma Vittoria Italian restaurant, and have transformed it into a “neo izakaya” – offering authenticity with a “twist”.
Downstairs is a cosy bar area, while the upper level is a cocktail lounge, plus a DJ booth. The interior is adorned in vintage furniture.

Chef Takako Tamura has created what he says is a traditional menu, centred on hot dishes such as stir-fried pork with kimchi, wagyu tataki, tempura fish and panko-crumbed chicken, beside an extensive list of sushi and sashimi.
The modernity comes from the drinks menu, proudly offering signature Izakaya cocktails, as in the Tsukemono martini, incorporating house-made Japanese pickle juice, and the bespoke Tamulager – a collaboration with Stomping Ground, made with rice and using New Zealand hops that is said to pair well with Japanese food.
Izakaya by Tamura began a subdued opening week Friday (12 May), ahead of regular trading beginning 18 May.
