MOUNTAIN GOAT OPENS NEW PUB IN NEWTOWN

Sydney has a new brewpub courtesy of Melbourne craft beer die-hards Mountain Goat, engineering the launch of a new venue in the inner west brewer heartland of Newtown.

Mountain Goat was one of Victoria’s first craft breweries. It has been creating prized beers at its inner-Melbourne brew pub for more than 20 years, which since 2004 has been at North Street, Richmond.

Venturing out of Victoria for the first time, the Melbourne team made the most of the pandemic closure period to make their way into a former furniture warehouse on King Street, which now features a 12-hectolitre brewing system and 12-tap bar, with plenty more room and plans to celebrate beer culture and hospitality.

Turning a ripe 23 years old this month and looking to ‘spread the wings’, Newtown was seen as an ideal landing ground due to its embrace of the Goat staples of arts, culture and live music.

“Newtown has welcomed us into the community, and it’s great to be part of the craft scene here,” reports Mountain Goat general manager Mick Bentley.

“After managing the entire project from lockdown in Victoria, to see people out enjoying our beers is awesome.

“We’re big believers in community and coming together to enjoy a beer, share stories and a laugh while listening to good tunes. And we can’t wait to find our place in the heart of Sydney’s craft beer and music community.”

The new facility heralds fresh draught Mountain Goat for Sydneysiders, brewed on-site. Kick-starting the tanks is a tribute to the new surrounds with Newtopia Pale Ale. Further special brews will follow soon.

Goat classics such as Steam Ale and Summer Ale will be sold as both draught and takeaway.

There is also a full kitchen serving meals and bar snacks to patrons in the 155-seat venue and beer garden.

The new Mountain Goat pub opened 6 October and will trade Monday through Saturday from 10am to midnight, and 10am to 10pm on Sundays, although patron capacity is currently subject to COVID-19 restrictions.

In spite of subdued conditions throughout hospitality, Bentley says they’re off to a good start.

“We’ve had a great first week. The pub has been busy every day – with our chicken wings and beer tasting paddles the stand-out winners from the menu.

“We’ve been on a crazy adventure for the last two decades and expanding out of Victoria is the latest chapter.”
