MERIVALE MOVES SOUTH ONTO QUARTERDECK

Justin Hemmes’ Merivale has acquired its first venue outside Sydney – the Quarterdeck, in “second home” Narooma.

Perched on the shores of Forsters Bay, The Quarterdeck is an institution of the Eurobodalla community, as seen in its foreshore having been classified as a precinct of historical significance.

The site where the Quarterdeck stands was originally an oyster-growers shed. At some point it was converted into a kiosk, later a long jetty and hire boats were added, and when Chris and Robyn Scroggy bought it in 2001 it was a fish and chip takeaway and tackle shop.

Chris and Robyn transformed it again into a popular ‘Tiki-style’ bar, the decor decked out with memorabilia and vestiges of its nautical-flavoured past. The Quarterdeck has gone on to woo day-trippers for the past two decades.

They also built a reputation for hosting Australian and international musicians on tour, counting blues, folk, bluegrass, R&B and Indie Rock acts part of the Quarterdeck “family”.

Narooma is an idyllic town in the Eurobodalla region of the NSW South Coast, on the A1, 350 kilometres south of Sydney, and home to around 3,500 people, including a part-time Hemmes.

“Narooma has become my second home and the backdrop to so many of my happiest memories with my family,” says the Merivale CEO.

“I think it is one of the most beautiful spots in the world, with a unique landscape, crystal clear waters and an amazing community of people who call it home. It has been an absolute privilege to spend so much time here over the past six years and I’m excited to now join the local business community.”

The deal was brokered by JLL Hotels’ Kate MacDonald, who suggests it is a great result for a beautiful area.

“Congratulations to Merivale on their first acquisition outside of Sydney. We’re looking forward to seeing the team thrive in this rare over-water gem, in a town where seal and ray sightings are an everyday occurrence.

“The locals and tourists of Narooma, and the surrounding Sapphire Coast, are in for a real treat.”

Merivale will take the keys in coming months and reports it will continue to trade as normal for the foreseeable future.

Hemmes poses the strong position the country finds itself in and benefits of the burgeoning boom in regional tourism.

“One of the silver linings to come out of the last year is a heightened appreciation for our own backyard, and excitement to explore our spectacular country and its coastline.

“We are so lucky to call Australia home.”
