MASSIVE SNOW DUMP – INSIDE SYDNEY PUB

The Greenwood Hotel in North Sydney has embraced the season of cold and trucked in 60 tonnes of snow for a massive winter party.

Yesterday 30 tonnes of the powder was delivered to the 1892 former church in the heart of the North Sydney CBD for night one, and today another load has arrived to freshen and ramp up the festivities.

Balmain Pub Group director Nick Wills told PubTIC he wanted to bring a bit of ski-field fun to Sydney.

“I’ve been skiing since I was four – I love it,” said Wills.

“We thought it would be a great way to embrace the cold, and everyone to cheer up and have some fun.”

The expensive exercise has attracted considerable attention – both from the big Thursday crowd that turned up to throw snow at each other last night, and curious media including Channel 7 News.

As well as the white stuff, the hotel is rocking snow cannons, an igloo and ice luge. There is a Rekorderlig warm cider bar and snow forest, GH Mumm Champagne bar, and Tanqueray Gin and Ketel One Vodka outdoor cocktail bars.

And of course ‘Schnappy Hour’ – from 6 – 8pm.

Wills says there are also hot tubs for those brave enough to get wet.

“We’ve got dozens of towels on stand-by, for anyone that makes it in … so far no-one has actually turned up in a swimming costume.”

The Greenwood Hotel is a magnificent sandstone building built as a church that has also previously been a school. The Balmain Pub Group acquired it late 2014 and has this year begun staged renovations to reinvigorate the historic venue.
