Pubs in Victoria are calling on the Andrews’ Government to speed up timeframes for easing of restrictions in light of the sharp reduction in COVID cases, as many operators prepare for innovation and a “summer like no other”. The Australian Hotels Association (Victoria) leads the call for re-evaluation and greater flexibility in the Hospitality Industry
The Andrews Government in Victoria has this week announced two rounds of additional business support funding, including special provisions for hotels and pubs throughout the State. On Sunday a $3 billion package was announced and on Monday another $290 million program unveiled, much of this earmarked for a move toward hospitality transitioning to post-COVID conditions.
Publicans, operators and owners have come together to plead with Government for clemency and more support if pubs are to survive, under the weight of the politicised Victorian response clutching at what could be overly ambitious targets. Liquor & Gaming has forced the seven-day closure of Balmain’s Unity Hall Hotel following repeated breaches of the Public Health Order. The pub has now been fined a total of $10,000 by authorities over two occasions. Government has warned from the outset that repeated breaches could mean temporary closure orders for venues. The Phoenix Hotel in Woollahra had Liquor & Gaming NSW inspectors visit twice in June. The policy at the time was largely to help educate and advise operators.
