BIG FISH SLAPPED WITH $11k FINE OVER MINOR BREACHES

Principals at a pub in Queensland’s Darling Downs have been convicted and fined $11,000 after breaches including allowing a minor to drink and gamble at the venue.

An Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR) investigation discovered breaches by Big Fish Drink P/L, of the Clifton Arms Hotel, dating back to November 2018.

The licensee and director appeared in Warwick Magistrate’s Court late December charged with multiple offenses, relating to supplying liquor to a minor and allowing them to wager, as well as for selling liquor outside their approved trading hours.

OLGR Executive Director Mike Sarquis condemned the behaviour and offered warning to all hospitality operators and staff.

“The defendants in this case displayed a clear lack of regard for Queensland’s liquor and wagering laws.

“Whether you work at a hotel in the city or a country pub in rural Queensland, responsible service of alcohol and responsible service of gambling must be practised at all times.

“It’s the responsibility of all staff and managers to check the ID of all patrons who may be minors, not just at the door but also at the bar and at wagering locations within their premises.”

Sarquis also warned that venues caught selling liquor outside of approved hours face possible fines, convictions and the potential of having their licence cancelled.
