SUNSHINE COAST SEES DAWN OF THE DOONAN

Hospitality giants the Comiskey Group, producers of two of Australia’s largest pubs, have announced the start to and a partnership with their new venue, The Doonan.

The Queensland family-owned company has been widely acclaimed for its creation and operation of the huge Eatons Hill Hotel, and sprawling Sandstone Point Hotel, injecting $200 million into the Moreton Bay region through the award-winning pubs.

This time, in their first venture outside of Moreton Bay, the Comiskeys have partnered with long-time friends and hospitality veterans, Josh Jones and ‘Nifty’ Neville Allen, after being granted approval for the new boutique venue on the Sunshine Coast.

The Group acquired the two-hectare site in Doonan back in 2006, with plans to develop the property and the pre-existing building, which was constructed in 1990 and operated as a German restaurant.

Nestled in the scenic Noosa Valley, the property is a ten-minute drive from Noosa or five minutes from Eumundi, making it an easy escape for locals and tourists.

The family saw it as “a great opportunity” and are now commencing the estimated $6 million project.

“I am pleased to announce that after 15 years of ownership, we have decided to make something of this incredible property, and have come up with not only a concept but a name for the new hotel development, The Doonan,” says Rob Comiskey, Group CEO.

Undergoing an extensive renovation, the existing structure will keep its unique exterior and distinctive red roof, while transforming into a modern garden-inspired setting highlighting landscape design.

There will be a large outdoor area, with playground and dining space, serving a paddock-to-plate dining experience, sourced predominantly from local food producers and Sunshine Coast craft beer breweries. A new Cellar Door will stock beers, wines and spirits, with a focus on local brands.

The new hotel venue will also create numerous job opportunities, with further preference for locals in positions such as bar, kitchen, reception and waitstaff.

The Doonan will also be close to home for the co-owners, Jones and Allen. Jones himself has a young family, and says he’s “really excited” about partnering with the Comiskeys to create a venue that resonates with families.

“As long-time locals, Nifty and I are looking forward to combining our passion for the area with our expertise in hospitality to deliver this venue, which I have no doubt will be a great addition to the community.”
