MELBOURNE PUB FINED NEARLY $10k FOR BREACHING ANTI-VIRUS MEASURES

A Melbourne pub has become the first to be fined under Victoria’s social distancing rules, working to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

The state has begun strict enforcement measures on social distancing, dubbed Operation Sentinel.

Police are issuing on-the-spot fines of $1652 for individuals, and $9913 for businesses.

This week police entered China Bar on Brunswick Street, finding two men seated and drinking.

Supposedly open only for takeaway, authorities report staff were not cooperative with the officers.

“A licensed bar in Fitzroy had six staff there present, two people present being served alcohol, and it was being treated as business was open totally,” said Deputy Commissioner Shane Patton.

“They refused to state how long they had been open or why they were open, in effect, giving a no comment response.

“Unless you’re living under a rock or you’re an idiot, it’s quite clear the restrictions are there.”

The venue was issued the nearly $10k fine, although employee Krystal Khor reportedly told the Herald Sun the men were friends of the owner and only there to meet with him. She claims it was an unlucky “coincidence” that the men were sitting drinking when police came in.

Victoria Police have conducted spot checks across the state this week, citing 1,225 in one 24-hour period, visiting homes, businesses and any non-essential services.
