VALE ROCK PUBLICAN IAN JONES

The Jones family and Oxford Hotel of Rockhampton have announced the passing of beloved father and industry stalwart, Ian Jones.

The long-time publican passed away last week, aged 68, following a two-year hard fought battle with cancer.

“It’s obviously a very sad time for our family but it’s been really heart warming to receive so many beautiful messages and tributes from dad’s friends and the community,” offered Ian’s son, Josh Jones.

Ian was the proud owner-operator of the Oxford Hotel since taking over the business with wife Helen late 1984, and it has been a huge part of their lives for the past 37 years.

Described as an “old-school publican” he connected with the community in times of celebration, and was there offering support in times of tragedy.

The couple’s three children grew up in the pub, living in the accommodation, with Helen cooking meals for lodgers while Ian manned the bar.

The Oxford has long played a vital role in the development of live music, with many local artists playing the pub, many making their debuts in the public bar.

Along the way, the Jones’ also developed and operated the nearby The Edge Restaurant & Bar for nine years before on-selling.

Ian’s fight to conquer his condition is said to have typified his character, saying even in his final days he was still going to beat it.

Affectionately known around town as “Old Man Jones”, he passed away at Greenslopes Private Hospital surrounded by loved ones. Ian is survived by his wife of 43 years, Helen, and their children Josh, Sasha and Brooke.

A service was held at Rockhampton Crematorium on Saturday, 12 February.

“If there is a bar in heaven you can bet he’s already found it and enjoying a cold beer right now,” says Josh.

“He sure does deserves one! Rest In Peace dad, we’re all going to miss you mate.”
