UNDIES BANDIT ON THE LOOSE

A would-be bandit wearing budgie smugglers on his head is on the run from police, after an attempted hold-up of a pub in Port Melbourne.

According to police, the man entered ALH’s Rex Hotel around 2.15am on Wednesday, 22 May.

“At the time of the incident, it is believed he was wearing some kind of dark material draped around him like a cape and a pair of dark-coloured underpants on his head.”

He approached a staff member and threatened them with a firearm, demanding cash.

However, the staffer was unable to access money. The man reportedly became agitated, and left.

He was caught on CCTV, last seen running from the hotel and tripping over on his ‘cape’.

Although shaken by the incident, no staff were physically injured.

Authorities were called and police searched the area, but they were unable to find him. They did find his cape in a laneway, which turned out to be a dog blanket.

Beneath his disguise, he was wearing a black t-shirt, pale pants and white sneakers.

The Armed Crime Squad is appealing for public help to identify the budgie smuggler bandit, releasing CCTV this week and letting it be known they would like to speak to anyone who may have spotted him or captured him on a dashcam.

Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

“While we want to hold this offender accountable for what he’s done, he clearly needs some support services, given that he is terrible at committing these kinds of crimes,” posed detective sergeant Mark Walsh.
