Despite Australia’s archival links to the UK, pubs in Britain vary somewhat from here, if not the rest of the world – as seen in girl-on-girl action and cranky patriotic seniors.
36-year-old Sarah Lee has been reprimanded for assaulting 22-year-old makeup artist Raegan Heggie in Harry’s Bar in Ayr.
Heggie was traversing through the crowded bar with a large inflatable alien on her back, described as a “typical” alien, “big head, small body, large eyes and green in colour”.
Lee was jostled by the alien, and an argument ensued.
“The accused has a glass in her left hand during this time, she moves the glass from the left hand to the right and throws it towards the complainer,” Depute fiscal Lindzi Bayne told the court.
The glass struck Heggie between the eyes, causing a laceration that required stiches.
“The doctor is unable to say if it will result in permanent scarring,” added Bayne.
Defence solicitor Gregor Forbes offered “I think everyone had had quite a bit to drink”.
Lee, who lives in Ayr, admitted to assaulting Heggie and throwing a glass. She received a £500 fine, to be paid at £20 per week.
Friends and family are reportedly “shocked” at the leniency of the sentence, relaying that the victim experienced “months of anxiety and stress over being a witness against someone who had so viciously attacked her”.

Around 6pm on Monday 10 June, a senior patron in Haddenham’s Three Kings Pub took offence to something said by a younger patron, who he saw as a “foreigner”.
The solidly built older man swung a clenched fist at the other man, sending him flying.
Dropping his pint glass, which smashed, he followed up with a rainstorm of punches before stomping the man on the floor unconscious with his heel.
Some attempt is made by other patrons to mitigate the violence, and the assailant is urged away when his initial rage has subsided. He returns seconds later, offering advice to “put him in recovery position”.
The cause of the incident is currently unknown, but thought to be racially motivated.
Cambridgeshire Constabulary were called to the pub, hearing someone had been injured. No arrests have been made, but they are appealing for witnesses.
The Pub has reportedly refused to comment.
It is not clear who recorded the assault, but the video has been circulating online.
