STAYING IN BUSINESS

In the immediate future the COVID-19 virus will continue to severely impact business and the economy, but there are measures operators can take to mitigate the potential damage going forward.

While the level of panic makes it seem the world is ending, in the long run most businesses will survive. Some will eventually be better off, after competitors fall away.

Beyond personal incentives, for the sake of the economy and livelihood of casual workers, operators need to act wisely and continue business where possible and prudent.

Have a plan

Regardless of what impact your business is feeling to date, get a plan in place of what to do if things get challenging. Consider the possibilities of staff shortages or supplier disruption and how to find solutions should the worst happen.

Communicate

Keep lines of communication open with staff and customers. Social media is the ideal medium here.

People are trending toward local options for foodservice and what socialising is still going on, so let them know how you are managing the situation and what is available.

Be flexible

New ideas and services and changes to existing offerings can be challenging, but the alternative of not being more flexible may be far worse.

Examples of this are phone ordering, takeaway and delivery, particularly for efficient menu options with minimal handling requirement.

Be warned that some patrons may be more difficult than usual, as everyone is under stress. It is worth remembering that people are more receptive to reason after you have listened to and acknowledged their concerns and emotion.

Business leaders see downturns as opportunities, as many things will return to normal in the medium- to long-term. Look for opportunities to be the solution.
