Coffs Hotels have joined the local Rotary and Australian charity DV Safe Phone to help collect unused mobile phones, for victims of domestic and family violence.
DV Safe Phone collects, tests and repurposes discarded mobile phones, distributing them – with chargers and starter SIM cards – via a network of more than 450 frontline agencies, which includes police stations and hospitals.
While the majority of victims are women, DV Safe Phone also supports men, and children who have fled with a parent.
The phones provide a vital and safe lifeline for people escaping dangerous situations, which can often be at a time when their regular phone has been taken or compromised.
“No one should be left without a safe way to call for help,” says Bob Carle, President of the Coffs City Rotary Club, which approached local hoteliers Welcome Hospitality Group and the Coffs Harbour Hotel.

There are now DV Safe Phone collection boxes set up in prominent locations at the Sawtell Hotel, Toormina Hotel, Moonee Tavern, and Coffs Harbour Hotel.
“Mobile phones are often the first thing taken by perpetrators, leaving victims isolated and unable to reach support,” explains Carle.
“Donating your unused phone is a simple act that can literally save a life.”
Access to a mobile phone can be a lifeline for someone in crisis. The collection boxes make for a powerful new purpose for what might otherwise be e-waste, and a simple way for locals to donate old phones, to help create safer communities.
The Coffs Harbour LGA recorded a frightening 694 domestic violence assaults in the 12 months to March, which was slightly down from on the prior year but still one of the highest counts in regional NSW.
The Coffs partnership was inspired by the efforts of the Woolgoolga Rotary Club, which has already placed collection boxes.
DV Safe Phone was launched in 2020 and since then has repurposed over 13,500 phones. The organisation lauds the efforts of the communities, hotels and all inspired to help.
“We’re incredibly grateful to Rotary clubs like Coffs City and Woolgoolga for getting behind our charity,” says Ashton Wood, CEO and founder of DV Safe Phone.
“We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the local community and hospitality venues who have come on board so generously.”
