An Illawarra man faces escalating charges after another man, who he allegedly hit during a brawl at the pub, has died as a result of his injuries.
Authorities state that around 10.50pm on 12 April emergency services responded to reports of an assault at a hotel on Central Road, in Unanderra.
Paramedics treated a 59-year-old man at the scene for serious head injuries, and he was taken to Wollongong Hospital in a critical but stable condition.
Officers from Lake Illawarra Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation.
In the afternoon on 16 April a 33-year-old man attended Lake Illawarra Police Station. He was arrested and charged with cause grievous bodily harm to person with intent, and affray. He was refused bail to later appear in Wollongong Local Court.
The Court later heard that the violent fracas was a feud between two families at the pub, with claims the victim was hit with a ‘coward punch’.
Sadly, yesterday news came that the man had died, nearly three weeks after the incident.
Police confirmed that as a result of his passing, they are now reviewing the charges against his alleged assailant.
The Unanderra pub was sold late 2023 by Redcape to Oscars Hotels. There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing on the part of the operators.
