Surviving the purgatory of subsidence, the iconic Hotel Commonwealth reopens after a multi-party restoration a decade in the making.
Established in 1910, the two-storey pub was built in the Colonial style, with ornate balustrades skirting the upper balcony and a classic bullnose roof over the front veranda.
For many years the emblazoned Hotel was known as Murphy’s pub. In 2014 it was acquired by Ipswich City Properties (ICP), controlled by Ipswich Council, and in 2015 it was deemed unsafe for occupancy and closed.
Since that time, ICP and Council have poured millions into the heritage project to revive it. Councillor Marnie Doyle reported that the building was “sinking” due to foundational problems, and had “effectively cracked in half”.
Rectification involved removing the building piece by piece, logging and storing everything off-site to allow the foundation works to be done. Once completed the building was put back in place, piece by piece.
In 2022 AusHotels purchased a lease agreement with Council, and in July this year the group was handed the keys.
Essentially a bare shell, AusHotels worked to build walls, fit ceilings and install cool rooms, piping, beer lines and bars. The interiors feature ornate arches and tiling, and emerald accents, amid theming inspired by the Hotel’s proximity to the precinct’s train station.
The group offers that the transformation blends old-world charm with 21st century comfort, for heritage “with a modern twist”.
Designed to cater to patrons of all types and any occasion, the operation incorporates family-friendly activities, functions and live music on weekends.
In preparation of the reopening, AusHotels released offers for ‘founding’ members, enticing with exclusive discounts, points, competitions, access to presale for upcoming events, and an invite to a VIP opening night.
Now employing a team of more than 20 ready-and-waiting locals, the landmark pub makes its highly anticipated return to the Nicholas St Precinct this month, opening the doors 8 November.
The community of Ipswich is invited to celebrate at the ‘Grand Opening Weekend’ 8-10 November.
On the menu is a selection of elevated pub classics said to be “reimagined with a gourmet flair” and a boutique bar boasting a curated selection of popular beers, local wines and signature cocktails.
Venue manager Sarah Knopke says since first announcing the Hotel’s return, earlier this year, they have been truly moved by the support of Ipswich locals, which has been “nothing short of amazing”.
“Our founding membership rounds sold out within hours,” she declares.
“And we’ve already seen over 1,200 people sign up for our mailing list even before our doors open.”
