The Victorian regulator has issued Goulburn Valley Hotel in Shepparton a fine of $100K, after finding it provided false information on an EGM licence application.
The GV Hotel applied to the Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) for a licence to operate 40 poker machines at the hotel, in November 2022.
It is a requirement under Victoria’s Gambling Regulation Act 2003 that criminal offending is disclosed as part of the licence application process.
However, the GV’s application failed to mention that the licence nominee had previously been found guilty, in 2022, of two counts of negligently dealing with the proceeds of crime, although no conviction was recorded.
“By providing wrong information, an applicant impedes the regulator from fully assessing their suitability to hold a licence,” stated VGCCC CEO Annette Kimmitt AM.
The Hotel’s cooperation with the investigation was reportedly taken into account in determining the massive fine, and both the GV and Pan Hotels P/L – another licence associated with the applicant – have had additional licence and reporting conditions applied.
Kimmitt offers that the fine “reflects the severity of the offence” and should demonstrate to all operators that the VGCCC is serious about compliance with legal obligations.
“We expect applicants to abide by the law and provide complete and accurate information.
“This is a critical part of ensuring that the gambling industry operates with safety and integrity and is free from criminal influence or exploitation.”
The GV Hotel has the option to appeal the decision at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).
