ELEPHANT BRIDGE CROSSES INTO NEW MANN HANDS

One of Victoria’s oldest inns, the stately Elephant Bridge Hotel, has sold to a prominent farming family, who bring plans to reinvigorate the recently restored pub into the community.

This historic two-storey bluestone establishment is described as “one of regional Victoria’s best restored and elegant” hotels. Built circa 1842 it still operates under its original licence, and occupies a generous 5,912sqm lot.

It provides multiple income streams, offering public bar, two dining rooms, wine cellar and indoor-outdoor wine bar, and a terraced amphitheatre for live music or weddings, licensed for up to 200 guests.

There are also four boutique guest accommodation rooms, and a two-room manager’s residence.

It is located in Darlington, just over two hours south-west of Melbourne, and is a landmark on the Hamilton Highway, central to the Otway Ranges and Grampian wine regions.

The private vendor purchased the dilapidated property several years ago, with the goal of restoring the bluestone structure to its former grandeur. Having realised her vision, during the pandemic it was listed as a freehold vacant possession.

It has now sold for $1.7 million to the Mann family, headed by Charlie and Lal, who have farming and pastoral businesses. Their established Larra Farm Shop sells produce such as lamb, eggs and beef, along with local artisan fare, such as jams, chutneys and cheeses.

The Manns have begun making some complementary alterations and additions, which may include converting the upstairs rooms into offices for the businesses. The couple say they look forward to energising the Elephant back into the hub of the community, while creating a destination venue with great food and hospitality for functions and day visitors.

“In addition to the day-to-day hotel operations, we have also relocated our farm produce store and set it up inside the hotel,” furthered Charlie.

Sale of the EBH was through CBRE Hotels’ Mat George, who says it was a unique opportunity and he is excited to see the incoming owners take the business to the next level.

“The previous owner provided a high-quality product, by painstakingly rebuilding and refurbishing the historical hotel.

“It’s great to see hotels in these districts become a focal point of the surrounding community and become viable businesses once again, offering a full complement of attractions.”
