DOYLES DIVEST FAMILY HOTEL AFTER 37 YEARS

The Doyle family are parting with their long-held and monikered Bridge Hotel in Mordialloc, as another stage of life unfolds.

Career publican Peter Doyle leased and operated the Balaclava Hotel until its sale, whereupon he leased the Bridge from Carlton & United Breweries, in 1983.

The original structure was built around 1853, on the banks of Mordialloc Creek close to where it empties into Port Philiip Bay, in Melbourne’s south-east. During the 1870s it was expanded to become a pub.

It is reputed to be one of the oldest buildings in the precinct, and held witness to key events such as the formation of the RACV, in 1903.

In 1964 it was almost destroyed by a fire in the cellar, and continued to house permanent guests up until 1983, when the Doyle’s took over.

The family converted an extension from the 1950s into what became a popular nightclub, named Images.

Building on success, Doyles Deck & Bistro opened in 1987, and in 1991 the family bought the freehold title from CUB.

It has always been a family affair, with Peter’s four daughters, and often their partners and children, at times living and working at the hotel. But the recent passing of their mother has prompted the decision to part with the home business.

The new owners, said to be a young couple with two children of their own, are due to take over in March.

PubTIC was unable to make contact for comment in time for publication, but wishes the Doyle’s all the best in their exit.

this is a really great venue. I hope the new owners add concurrent Fox sports channels in the excellent bar, I think they can only show one at a time due to restricted license. Otherwise there’s nothing wrong with the place at all. Lots of competition in Mordialloc but each venue has it’s own vibe. Don’t avoid this one just because it’s on the other side of the bridge over the creek from everything else.
