DIXON REVEALED AS THE VIC

Michael Dixon’s Athena Hospitality has announced it is the name taking over from ALH at Brisbane’s triumphant Victory Hotel.

Built in 1855, the pub was originally named the Prince of Wales. It is renowned as an example of 19th century architecture and has been on the Brisbane City Council heritage register since 2009, despite having undergone significant renovations in 1986 and 2000, and almost being destroyed by a fire in 2008.

It is popularly known as The Vic, and believed to be Brisbane’s oldest continually operating pub.

Since the early 90s it has been under the control of ALH, pubs division of the listed Endeavour (ASX:EDG), on a lease due to expire in March.

But after two decades, in February the group called time on its operation at the old watering hole, leaving The Vic destined to close. The final day of trade was announced as Sunday, 19 February.

Freehold owner of the property is Precision Group, which has held the title since 2005 and was ready to see the old landmark cease trade when news leaked that a ‘new, unnamed operator’ would soon take over.

Athena is led by Michael Dixon, son of Bruce Dixon, former CEO and founder of Dixon Hospitality, which became Australian Venue Co (AVC).

The new owners report they plan to work closely with Precision, sharing a clear vision to “bring life back” to the Victory, involving a complete makeover in coming months.

Following Australia’s largest publican, Dixon suggests it is Athena’s size that will make the difference at The Vic, through the hands-on approach it looks to take in all its venues.

“Being a family-run company, we’ve kept the team close and personal to ensure every asset we take on gets the individual touch it needs,” he says.

Reopening the doors this week, Dixon is eager to carry on the legacy.

“Some exciting plans are on the cards in the near future to bring the Vic back as the hotel it’s so famously known for.

“Athena and Precision could not be happier to continue the next chapter at Brisbane’s oldest and most iconic hotel.”
