Dozens of firefighters fought to save the historic Burwood Inn of Merewether, as a blaze took hold in the kitchen and spread through the building.
Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews bearing more than 40 personnel responded to calls for help at the Hunter region pub soon before 10am on Tuesday.
They found the rear of the 147-year-old hotel well-alight, with black smoke said to be billowing from the area where the restaurant was located.
It’s believed the fire began in the kitchen, quickly moving into the restaurant, and bar, beer garden and storage areas.
In a concerted attack, crews brought it under control in under an hour and it was ruled extinguished soon after 12pm, although hotspots continued to be doused and monitored for reignition.
The efforts saved the building from major structural damage, and prevented the fire reaching the accommodation and front bar.
Fifteen people were evacuated during the blaze, but there were no reports of injuries.
The scene was handed over to NSW Police, which has begun an investigation into the cause and circumstances.
The stoic Victorian pub is owned by the Burford family, who also hold the deeds at Merewether’s Prince Of Wales Hotel. It has history as a popular hangout for the Newcastle Knights.
“All staff are safe and well, just all devastated,” posted the family on Facebook.
“Will let you know more later, but for now, the Burwood Inn is closed until further notice.”
