Endeavour Group and ALH have stepped up the footprint in the Territory, securing approval to buy Mick Burns’ legendary The Cav.
The Cavenagh Hotel is one of the Northern Territory’s oldest pubs, first licensed in 1932 as the Don Hotel, which later became Darwin’s first casino.
Since the early 2000s it has been owned by Mick Burns, said to be Australia’s largest saltwater crocodile farmer, through his hospitality business Salsa Holdings.
After previous forays into divestment, he put the word out in 2023 that he was looking for a buyer, the man of few words saying that after a long time, it was “time to move on”.
In April came rumours that Australia’s largest publican was running the ruler over the business, but its significant retail interests in the Territory required assessment by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) before the sale could proceed.
Australian Leisure & Hospitality, the hotels arm of Endeavour Group, owns around 350 venues across the country.
It already counts five pubs in Darwin, including the Beachfront, bought in 2022, the Parap Tavern, under lease to Charter Hall, and the Palmerston Tavern, but The Cav will be the group’s first pub in the Darwin CBD.
ALH took the keys this week, committing to “retaining the vibe and feel” of the popular watering hole, which features extensive accommodation and a large swimming pool.
“We want to reaffirm that The Cav will continue to be the beloved gathering place for locals and tourists alike,” said a statement from management.
In considering plans for the future, specifically maintaining or enhancing the operation, the group offers that any improvements will be “thoughtful and in keeping with the essence” of what has come to be expected at the landmark hotel.
“We understand how much The Cav’s character means to the community – the atmosphere, the friendly service, and of course, the best steak in town. Rest assured, these elements will remain unchanged and will continue to be the heart and soul of The Cav experience.”
