FELONS BREWING CO MAKES A SPLASH AT MANLY WHARF

Artemus Group has opened the first of its Sydney ventures, Felons Brewing Co, at the Manly Wharf Bar site.

The Group acquired the property in April, with the blessing of previous owner Ben May.

The heritage-listed Manly Wharf, first built in 1855 as the northern terminal for the Sydney to Manly Ferry, was Artemus Group’s first acquisition in New South Wales.

This follows its successful transformation of Howard Smith Wharves in Brisbane, a heritage-listed area that now includes a hotel, bars, event spaces and Brisbane’s award-winning Felons Brewery.

Felons derives its name from the true story of four convicts who, in 1823, were blown off course from Sydney to Illawarra, ultimately becoming shipwrecked on Moreton Island.

The Manly site will offer some of Felons’ best brews, including Australian Pale Ale, Galaxy Haze and Crisp Lager, as well as a Japanese Rice Lager, a barrel-aged, limited-edition brew specifically made for Manly.

Former culinary director of Rockpool Bar and Grill, chef Corey Costelloe, is now consulting on the locally focused menu with group executive chef Shaun Hyland, group kitchen manager Mat Brazier and executive chef Chris Augustyn.

Entertainment will include live funk, soul and jazz as well as some of Sydney’s top selectors showcasing vinyl classics.

Adam Flaskas, co-founder and director of Artemus Group, said they are thrilled to unveil Felons at its latest location.

“We believe Felons will elevate what locals have always loved about this destination, bringing fresh energy with award-winning beers, a creative produce-driven menu and a stellar live music lineup. It’s all part of building a legacy for future generations of Manly residents and visitors to enjoy.”

That legacy includes Felons’ sustainability focus. Felons has a goal of zero waste and has now also partnered with environmental not-for-profit Seabin Foundation, where one item of plastic will be removed from the ocean for every glass of Japanese Rice Lager sold.

Being true to their ideals of creating a thriving community, Felons is introducing community connection opportunities including a weekly run club and beer yoga sessions.

Felons will also be collaborating with locals in Manly’s art scene and hosting charity events and sustainability workshops.

Brand director Dean Romeo believes Manly is the perfect fit for Felons.

“We want to embrace that laid-back surf village charm, providing a space where everyone – locals, visitors, friends and family – can enjoy great beer and good times by the water. We’ve got plenty in store that we can’t wait to share with the Manly community,” he said.
