Hurley Hotel Group has announced plans to build the new $30 million Panorama Hotel, to replace its nearby, soon-to-be-acquired Tonsley Hotel.
The greenfield Panorama pub is the plan to supersede the Tonsley, which is being taken by the South Australian Government as part of the North-South Corridor project.
The Group is looking to the 3.4-Ha former TAFE site, under master plan by local developer Landmark Homes and Properties, which is soon beginning construction of a petrol station and retail, north of the proposed Hotel. Landmark is also planning townhouses and apartment blocks on the site.
Due to be constructed over the next two years, the new Hotel will create 150 permanent hospitality and tourism jobs, including some of the Tonsley’s current 50 employees, who will be redeployed within the Group.
The first stage of construction, due to commence later this year, is a bottleshop co-branded Hurley Cellars and Sip’n Save.
Working with local firm Cox Architecture, stage two will be the five-storey Panorama Hotel, offering on the ground floor a sports bar, gaming room and casual café bar and restaurant with a sunken fire pit.
Upstairs there will be three levels of accommodation rooms and suites, on the fifth level a rooftop bar and multiple function spaces, providing panoramic views of the ocean, city and hills.
Plans cite the accommodation as ‘adaptable’ to suit all tastes and budget, with something for everyone. The 77 rooms will include 26 one- and two-bedroom serviced apartments, making them well suited to both long- and short-term visitors to local places and events, such as the nearby Flinders Hospital, Flinders University, and South Australian Leisure and Aquatic Centre.
“We expect this project will attract a wide range of tourists to the area, including international visitors, those from interstate and locals wanting a weekend away,” notes Group GM Sam McInnes.
The family-owned Hurley Hotel Group is proudly South Australian and has been in operation for nearly 50 years, now employing 680 people throughout the 11 venues across South Australia and NSW.
Patriarchs Peter and Jenny Hurley have offered to plant two trees for every one removed from the Panorama site, on their private 18-Ha property in the Adelaide Hills.
A development application for the new Panorama Hotel has been lodged at Mitcham Council, set for a public consultation period from 22 March to 11 April.
