NEW DIRECTION FOR $40m HIGHWAY HOTEL PROJECT

Martin Palmer is seeking approval for revised development plans at his $40 million project at the award-winning Highway Hotel, Plympton.

Palmer Hospitality operates the celebrated Highway and Warradale Hotels, and has been exploring plans for a large residential and retail development at the Plympton site.

A former submission proposed four stages of development, beginning with East Tower, bringing office space and 16 apartments, and a second building holding retail and 26 serviced apartments.

The plans were first approved back in 2007, but scaled back in 2013. The $9 million stage one is currently under construction, scheduled for completion in May 2018.

But recognising changes in market conditions and opportunities, the proposed subsequent stages have been modified.

The new submission ditches the serviced apartments, allowing for a larger supermarket space, increased by over 200sqm, and a range of retail and foodservice businesses, and the East Tower sees an additional 12 apartments.

The pared-back stages two and three have been amalgamated, and the final stage will now be construction of another residential tower with 42 more apartments.

The project is expected to take up to six years, and a report commissioned by the Group estimates it will create nearly 100 jobs during construction, and another 215 full-time jobs for operation.

It is not known how long approval for the revised plans may take, nor when stage two may begin.
