SHORT SEES DOUBLE IN REDFERN PUB

Marty Short has grown his Redfern presence with the purchase of the former Courthouse Hotel for around $6 million.

Situated on the corner of George and Redfern Streets, the old Courthouse Hotel is opposite the landmark former Redfern Post Office, built in 1882. The Hotel has been “reinvented” over the years and the building is split between the licensed venue and three tenants, including Domino’s Pizza and H&R Block.

The pub – currently operating as Mr Mary’s – comprises a ground floor bar and gaming room, with 15 EGMs, and first floor featuring a large L-shaped bar, function room, outdoor terrace, commercial kitchen, amenities, office space and ‘flexible trading’ approvals.

The W. Short Hotel Group picked up Redfern’s Tudor Hall in April last year, with Marty Short suggesting at the time it will “fit perfectly into the portfolio”.

This second Redfern pub brings the family Group further opportunity to be part of the area’s increasing gentrification.

“Much like we were with the Tudor Hall, we are really excited about engaging with the community in bringing this landmark venue back to relevance and further activating the area,” says Short.

The property is a prime candidate for further development and the sale was negotiated off-market by JLL Hotels, who report the vendors have received a number of approaches by developers interested in the site.

“Although Sydney hotel supply is constricting, opportunities still exist for astute operators and syndicators,” said JLL national director John Musca, who reports $30m in pub sales in the past month.

“Much like the Alexandria Hotel sale, where another respected Sydney hotelier is set to revitalize that venue sympathetic to local needs, it’s a pleasure to play a part in the sale, and therefore resurrection, of the Courthouse.”

The Hotel was built in the 1920s and long operated by Tooths & Co.
