WHEN THE LOCAL IS A LIFELINE

While the Australian Government recognises October as ‘Mental Health Month’, 10 October is officially recognised globally as World Mental Health Day.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that the two objectives for World Mental Health Day are to raise awareness of mental health issues worldwide, and to mobilise efforts supporting good mental health.

This year, Mental Health Australia’s theme is ‘Connect with your community’, and offers free resources to help promote the day.

As high-impact businesses in their communities, pubs can play a role in fostering the greater community connection.

Mental Health Australia, which is the national, independent peak body for the mental health sector, encourages conversations around mental health to reduce stigma and to help those in need to reach out.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), 43.9 per cent of Australians will experience poor mental health in their life.

The ABS also notes that mental health symptoms can affect individuals without meeting the criteria for a disorder, and impact not just the individual but those in their support networks.

While creating an environment where communities feel safe, seen and heard is ongoing, World Mental Health Day serves as a vital reminder of the importance of connection, awareness, and accessible support for the nearly half of Australians who will face mental health challenges in their lifetime.
