SYDNEY MAN IN COURT OVER BALMAIN GLASSING

A Drummoyne man has faced court over an unprovoked ‘glassing’ and assault on another patron in a Balmain pub.

Court records stated 32-year-old Daniel Boyd engaged two other men in the poker machine room of the Unity Hall Hotel, around 9:30 on 26 July 2019.

Boyd approached one of the men, asserting that he knew him. When he became aggressive, the second man stepped between them, and Boyd backed off and exited the room.

He soon returned, holding a glass, and approached the men again. The second man got up from his chair and reportedly told Boyd to “settle down”.

Boyd made to leave again, before turning and glassing the second man in the head, then holding him against the wall and repeatedly punching him in the head until others separated them.

The assailant fled the scene, but the incident was captured on CCTV and staff were able to identify him as a regular. Court documents show he appeared to be intoxicated.

The victim was treated at hospital for lacerations to his neck and ear, requiring stitches, and contusions to his eye and jaw.

Boyd later presented himself to Newtown Police and was arrested. Injuries sustained to his hand in the attack were documented.

Last week he appeared before Downing Centre Local Court, where he pleaded guilty to the charge of reckless wounding. A second charge based in intent to cause grievous bodily harm was dropped.

He will return for sentencing late February.
