SORELLA SNARES ADELONG ROYALTY

Growing group Sorella has taken the keys to the historic large-format Royal Hotel of Adelong, from long-term owners.

The two-storey Royal occupies a prominent 2,023sqm corner site on Tumut Street, where it is part of the Snowy Mountains Highway. Known locally as ‘The Top Pub’ it offers a classic public bar, bistro dining, accommodation and a gaming room with two machines.

In 2005 the pub was famously hit by a B-Double semi, nearly destroying it and making headlines around the country.

It was painstakingly restored by the freehold owner and then tenant, Luke Hindmarsh.

Adelong is around 80 kilometres south-east of Wagga Wagga, or 160 west of Canberra. The major population centre for the region is Tumut, approximately 19 kilometres east.

Alluvial gold was discovered around 1857 in Adelong Creek and Golden Gully and the local population swelled to over 30,000 people. The mine closed in 1914, but the town and mining history are recognised as having historic importance.

Long-term owners Angelo Vardanega and James Nugent reportedly viewed the buoyant market as an opportunistic time to divest, and engaged JLL Hotels’ Greg Jeloudev for an off-market sale by Private Treaty.

This follows the proximate sales of Tumut’s Royal Hotel in January, and Star Hotel in June.

The freehold going concern has been sold for an undisclosed price to local group Sorella, adding to the group’s home base, the Wade Hotel in Leeton, and its Australian Hotel in Yass, purchased early 2020.

Sorella lists directors Stacey Challacombe, and Kylie and Tara Preston.
