SMART SYSTEMS FOR BETTER PAYMENTS

As hospitality rebounds from disruption, technology continues to find new gains, and payment provider Zeller offers features designed to help pub owners improve cashflow.

The argument for adopting technology products in business is typically about a faster or better solution for current or new problems.

“Being tech savvy definitely helps us to streamline processes a lot easier,” says Nicholas Schultze, one of the owners of Ascot Vale Hotel.

“We have a lot of trust in technology these days, and if something is going to make our job easier, then of course we’re going to look at it seriously.”

It is reported that 40 per cent of purchases today incur some manner of surcharge, and a growing number of business owners are opting to pass on the cost of processing card transactions.

In the past year alone, the number of Australian transactions with a surcharge applied has more than tripled, from 12 per cent (July 2021) to 42 per cent (July 2022), reports Zeller, citing data from its network of terminals.

The Zeller terminal allows merchants to pass on all or a percentage of surcharges such as merchant fees to customers. The function can be easily toggled on and off.

Financial data shows American Express transactions are on average 50 per cent larger than Visa and Mastercard transactions, but many merchants charge higher fees for Amex, prompting some operators to not accept the card.

Zeller provides instant AMEX acceptance at one low price, without additional fees for AMEX transactions.

Many servers struggle with the awkward interaction when asking patrons if they’d like to give a tip. According to Zeller data, the average tip in 2022 in Australia is around seven per cent of the total purchase amount.

The Zeller terminal has an in-built tipping functionality that can easily be turned on and off. Some operators are relaying an increase of 30 per cent in staff tips since switching to the system.

An EFTPOS system that integrates with the venue’s POS is crucial for hospitality business owners. It means that on payment, purchased items are pushed directly to the EFTPOS machine, saving time and eliminating room for human error typing in amounts.

Zeller cites integration with over 600 point-of-sale solutions, as well as a new collaboration with Xero Bank Feeds, for further accounting efficiencies.

The company’s recent pub report is the result of a survey of pub and venue owners around the country, finding many operators are embracing the new generation of tech solutions. It offers insights and number-driven details on the industry. See more on the Zeller Pub Report HERE.
