The Firehouse Hotel’s Damien Montgomery is on fire – taking on the High Country Charity Ride 2022, in the quest to find a cure for cancer.
Montgomery and his group of ‘Cycos’ have entered the gruelling ‘Tour de Cure High Country Charity Ride’ this year, to be held in March … forging pain into productivity.
It demands four days and 500 kilometres through Victoria’s mountains, raising funds for cancer research, prevention and support projects.
The licensee of North Sydney’s Firehouse is an active cyclist, but was drawn to the Tour de Cure after his wife, Belinda, was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago.
Cancer affects everyone in some way, sooner or later, and like so many Australians it came as a life-changing shock to the couple and their teenage daughters.
“Life turned upside-down, and if it wasn’t for the plan and care she was given by the medical team, it would have been a whole lot tougher,” admits Damien.
Thankfully, after multiple rounds of radiation and chemo, Belinda has the all-clear. Damien says they are “extremely grateful” and want to support others through fund-raising.
Liquor accords are known for donating to local charities and organisations, so when Damien, a committee member of Harbourside Liquor Accord, approached them about a donation, the idea was unanimously supported.
The Accord kicked off Damien’s fund-raising with $2,100 two weeks ago.
A few days later, ‘Brendan’ matched the pledge with $2,100 of his own.
And a few days after that, ‘Kim’ followed suit with another $2,100.
Damien laments that cancer is everyone’s concern.
“Please help a fellow publican raise much-needed funds to find a cure for cancer.
“This terrible disease affects all of us in some way, so please dig deep and help us help everyone.”
The fundraising currently (at time of writing) stands at $8,217.50 – against a minimum target of $10k.
