Local mum Jasmine Turner is the talk of the town of Proston, after reviving its beloved watering hole, the Golden Spurs Hotel.
Proston is a classic Queensland municipality, located around 300 kilometres north-west of Brisbane, counting local population of around 400.
A central meeting place for the South Burnett community, the Spurs sadly closed earlier this year.
At the ripe age of 29, Turner already boasts more than a decade working in pubs, including five years at the Golden Spurs before recently moving to Nanango, around 100 kilometres south.
When the pub closed, locals began contacting her, thinking she could be its saviour.
Now, doing it ‘for the community’ she has taken on the new venture, open for business every day, from 10am.
“You can’t have a town without a pub,” she explains.
Turner says she loves the atmosphere at the Proston pub, and has begun boosting its appeal, with multiple raffles on Friday nights, and plans to introduce live music and bring back the Spurs’ Australia Day woodchopping event.
The kitchen is serving “classic pub grub” based in schnitzels, steaks and rissoles.
The first-time publican has rapidly become one of the most popular people in town, reporting “nothing but the best” from eager returning patrons in the first week, since resuming trading 11 May.
“Thank you so much to everyone that came in today and supported the start of this crazy adventure,” says Jasmine.
“See you all here tomorrow.”
