HERO OF WATERLOO HONOURS 98-YEAR-OLD JAZZ ICON

One of Sydney’s oldest pubs, the Hero of Waterloo Hotel has immortalised long-term resident musician Valda Marshall in a life-sized portrait, unveiled at a recent gala ceremony.

Owner Kazuko Nelson, widow of previous owner Ivan Nelson, wanted to ensure future generations would remember Australia’s oldest jazz performer, who has been playing at the venue since the late 1970s.

Marshall, who is about to turn 98, is a self-taught musician who has rarely missed a gig.

Nelson commissioned artist Cindy Scharka for the piece, which depicts Valda playing one of her favourite instruments.

The portrait will remain on permanent display at the hotel.

The portrait was unveiled at a gala ceremony by Member for Sydney Alex Greenwich as part of a fundraiser for the Sydney Children’s Hospital, with the event supported by Lion Nathan.

“I have known Valda for more than 25 years and she truly is part of the living history of the pub,” said Nelson.

“She is a very special person, known for her musical ability and her fashion-sense.

“I remember my late husband, Ivan, said to me before he passed – ‘look after the pub and look after Valda’ and I have tried my best to do both.

“This portrait will keep Valda’s memory alive long after she has gone.”
