ELEPHANT BRIDGE HOTEL SALE COMES WITH RESIDENT GHOST

The historic Elephant Bridge Hotel, one of Victoria’s oldest continuously licensed regional pubs, has just hit the market.

Meticulously restored, the bluestone hotel has served locals, farmers and travellers for 184 years in the tiny town of Darlington, 194 kilometres south-west of Melbourne.

With sweeping rural views and striking architecture and sitting on a 6000sqm landholding, the pub’s ground floor features a front bar, a large beer garden and a courtyard spacious enough to accommodate events and functions, as well as dining areas and a commercial kitchen.

Upstairs offers four heritage bedrooms, common areas, and two bathrooms, which could be utilised as either boutique accommodation or an on-site residence.

The hotel also comes with a resident ghost.

Some claim it is one of Australia’s most haunted, believing the ghost of former licensee Adeline Satchwell continues to keep watch from the top window.

“The old owners always said to me ‘don’t worry, Adeline looks after the place,’” said current owner Charlie Mann.

“I’m not a superstitious guy, but I’ve stayed upstairs before after a night of drinking and have woken up in the middle of the night and have definitely felt something eerie around,” he continued.

Mann purchased the Elephant Bridge in 2021 for his wife, following her cancer diagnosis.

“We had no prior hospitality experience, but we farm close by,” Mann told PubTIC.

While the couple have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the pub’s story, due to her ongoing health issues they have decided to spend more time with their family.

The Elephant Bridge was previously owned by Karen Blomquist, who significantly restored the property, including an upgrade to all essential infrastructure, all while maintaining the historic integrity of the building.

The Manns put in solar and fencing, ensuring the sale will be walk-in walk-out. He hopes someone local will take on the town’s sole pub, which is expected to sell for around $2 million.

“While the Elephant is currently leased month-to-month, the property would suit an owner operator,” suggests agent Davina Pickles, of Ray White Camperdown Victoria.

The freehold going concern is being sold via Expressions of Interest, closing Friday 17 April 2026.
