CHANGES TO NSW BAND CLASSIFICATIONS

The Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority has approved updates to the band system used to assess applications for gaming machines to reflect data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2016 Census.

The ABS sets the Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2) geographical areas to represent communities that interact socially and economically, and ILGA uses them to consider requests to increase EGM numbers in a venue within that precinct.

ILGA classifies SA2s as being Band 1, 2 or 3, depending on the existing number of machines in the area, and other socio-economic factors including how much is spent on gaming machines.

“When a hotel or club applies to increase their gaming machines, the band they are located in affects whether they need to undertake a Local Impact Assessment (LIA) or what type of LIA they need to submit to ILGA,” explains a spokesperson for Liquor & Gaming NSW.

A list of all SA2s and whether or not they have changed is available HERE.
