As Australia’s electric vehicle ownership continues to grow, venues such as pubs are emerging as a logical addition to the country’s expanding charging network.
While major retail centres have led the rollout to date, the next phase will increasingly rely on accessible, community-based destinations where people already spend time. That is where venues have a genuine opportunity.
While there is no need to rush into installing chargers, venues should start thinking strategically about where EV charging could fit into future planning. Many pubs already have the attributes charging providers value, including established parking, strong visibility, regular visitation and facilities that encourage people to stay.
Unlike many charging locations, pubs are destinations in their own right.
Members and guests visit for dining, entertainment and events, often remaining on site for an hour or more. That dwell time aligns well with EV charging, allowing visitors to recharge both their vehicle and enjoy the facilities at the same time.
For venues, the opportunity extends beyond providing a service. Charging has the potential to attract new visitors, increase time spent on site and generate additional food, beverage and gaming revenue. In some cases, partnerships with specialist charge point operators may also provide an additional income stream through lease arrangements, licence fees or revenue sharing.
Many venues have already taken the plunge over the last couple of years, such as the Hurley Group’s iconic Arkaba Hotel in Adelaide, or the Windorah Hotel in Queensland.
For many venues, DC fast charging is likely to present the strongest long-term opportunity. These chargers support longer journeys, improve access for drivers who cannot easily charge at home and strengthen charging coverage across suburban and regional communities.
However, fast charging infrastructure requires significant investment, electrical capacity and specialist expertise, making government co-funding an important part of the commercial equation.
The key message for venues is simple. Now is the time to understand whether your site has the characteristics operators and funding programs are looking for.
As Australia’s charging network continues to expand, pubs are well placed to play a much larger role in supporting the transition to electric vehicles while delivering long-term value for their communities.
