LAUNDY’S WATSONS BAY HOTEL UNVEILS $3 MILLION ‘REIMAGINING’

On Wednesday 29 October, members of the greater Laundy family welcomed 200 guests to the grand re-opening of Watsons Bay Hotel, and its Top Deck and Mid Deck.

Hosted by owners Shane and Danielle Richardson (nee Laundy), the party celebrated the completion of its six-month long $3 million transformation, with Arthur Laundy attending as a special guest to unveil the new contemporary spaces.

Guests were treated to a pyrotechnic display, live music, DJs and drinks, with canapes and interactive food stations curated by head chef Damian Heads.

Just in time for summer trading, the transformation is the most significant in the hotel’s 190-year history, with Etic Design bringing the Richardson’s vision of versatile spaces that showcase the spectacular harbour views.

Danielle says the Top Deck has long been a favourite spot for locals and visitors to enjoy the harbour views.

“With this renovation, we’ve enhanced what was already great about the space while solving practical challenges that allow us to better serve our community and guests who have made this venue a Sydney institution,” she explains.

The Top Deck now boasts wrap-around bifold windows, creating a fluid connection between interior and exterior, with a dry bar along the windows to make the most of the views.

Practical considerations were given to ensure direct bathroom access and an internal entrance, as well as weather protection.

Capacity of the Top Deck is 150 standing or 102 seated, while the Mid Deck, with its new decking, furniture and banquette seating, serves 60 seated.

The hotel’s Sunset Room & Bar has also received a complete refresh with new flooring and updated bathrooms, although the designers were careful to retain its Hamptons appeal.

With fresh whites, coastal blues and harbour tones, along with warm neutrals, textural details and attention paid to lighting, the new spaces are leisurely and inviting.

All spaces have been designed to seamlessly transition from casual gatherings to corporate functions.

“We’ve focused on creating spaces where people feel they can stay for hours,” said Etic Design director Emilie Delalande.

Chef Head’s new summer menu has been inspired by the hotel’s location, and summer will also see a new signature cocktail menu.

Watsons Bay Hotel has also launched Club Amalfi, a European-inspired beach club designed for long, leisurely Sunday afternoons. It is to be held once a month during summer, pairing the relaxed spirit of Mediterranean beach culture with the hotel’s stunning harbour setting.

“This isn’t merely a renovation – it’s a complete reimagining that enables guests to create unforgettable moments, whether they’re enjoying sunset cocktails or celebrating life’s most significant milestones against one of the world’s most spectacular backdrops,” concludes Danielle.
