SONNEL UNVEILS MARRICKVILLE TRANSFORMATION

Sonnel Hospitality has announced yet another hotel transformation, shifting its focus east to make more in Sydney’s inner west.

Complementing news of the group’s unveiling $75 million remodelling plans across four of its key venues, Sonnel, formerly the Nelson Meers Group, has revealed the Marrickville Tavern’s new look.

Consultant Justine Baker, former CEO of Solotel, has driven the redevelopment, which embraces the hotel’s history. The Tavern has been serving its community for 141 years and now honours its past with a modern sports bar feel.

Jeff Fenech

Having welcomed sports stars such as Kostya Tszyu, Billy Dib, Andy Bernal, Renee Gartner and Milos Ninkovic, its main feature is a mural celebrating the sporting achievements of local hero Jeff Fenech.

The piece, acknowledging Fenech’s rise from Marrickville local to international champion, was created by artists Miguel Gonzalez (M-LON) and Lara Allport (The Drawing Arm), and is signed by Fenech.

The design also includes memorabilia such as an IBF World Championship belt signed by Kostya Tszyu.

Three-metre LED screens sit above the pool table, while ten other screens are found across the venue, showing games 24/7, and prioritising women’s sports.

Free pool all day Tuesdays and well-priced cocktails are both part of the appeal to locals, and it is the only pub in the precinct with a late-night 4am licence (Monday to Saturday).

The new-look Marrickville Tavern officially kicked off with a Super Bowl party last week.
