A perfect match for Irish soups and stews.

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • 4 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • ¼ cup buttermilk

Preheat the oven to 190 degrees C. Lightly grease a large baking sheet.

Mix flour, softened butter, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together in a large bowl.

Stir in buttermilk and egg.

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly.

Form dough into a round loaf and place on the baking sheet.

Brush the loaf with a mixture of melted butter and 1/4 cup buttermilk.

Cut an ‘X’ into the top of the loaf.

Bake for 45 to 50 minutes.
